Microprint

Hi List,

Two years ago we revisited our U.S. Government Documents microprint
collection to see if technology had advanced to permit digitizing
microprints and producing readable text. We finally gave up, since when the
tiny print was digitized and enlarged it lost too much clarity. The problem
was not our scanning equipment or skill... the quality of the printed text
was just so poor that it looked terrible at any size or resolution. The
print is readable when blown up on old-fashioned readers, but digitization
just is not working.

My question is, have any other microprint collection owners discovered
the same thing? If so, have you found a solution? We're seeking a digital
option because the old readers cannot be attached to printers, so copies
for patrons are impossible at the moment.

Thanks,

Chuck Thomas
