                        ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY

                      SPECIAL COLLECTIONS CATALOGER

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Performs cataloging (all formats except serials) and
authority control for materials in Special Collections, the Southwestern
Writers Collection, and the Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican
Photography.  Coordinates serials work with the Serials Cataloging Unit.
Applies AACR2, LCRI, LCSH, LC classification, and APPM (Archives,
Personal Papers, and Manuscripts) for manuscript cataloging.
Responsible for workflow within the Special Collections Cataloging unit
including supervising a library assistant and students.  Participates in
formulating and interpreting departmental policies and procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned. Reports to the Head Cataloger and
works cooperatively with the Curator, Special Collections.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: An ALA-accredited masterís degree with
coursework in special collections and/or archives; knowledge of AACR2,
LCRI, LCSH, LC classification, and APPM; ability to work harmoniously
with others; ability to formulate and communicate complex verbal and
written procedures. Preferred:  Previous experience in special
collections cataloging using OCLC and the DRA automated library system;
knowledge of archival practice; knowledge of computer applications in
the special collections/archival environment; knowledge of the writers,
literature and photography of the Southwestern United States; basic
reading knowledge of Spanish.

SALARYAND BENEFITS:   Assistant Librarian: $2,325 - $2,506 monthly.
Salary based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include monthly
contribution to health insurance/benefits package and retirement
program.  No state or local income taxes.

ALBERT B. ALKEK LIBRARY:   (library.swt.edu): Holdings of the Alkek
Library exceed 1.2 million volumes. The library is a selective
depository for U.S. Government and Texas documents, and is  a
participant in TexShare.  Special Collections is  home to  the
Southwestern  Writers Collection, an archive devoted to the writers and
artists of the region, and the Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern &
Mexican Photography. Access to physical  and  electronic collections and
other bibliographic resources is available through the DRA automated
library system and other online, CD-ROM, and Internet interfaces.

SWT AND SAN MARCOS: Southwest Texas State University is located in San
Marcos  (sanmarcostexas.com), a scenic river community on the eastern
edge of the Texas hill country between Austin and San Antonio.  SWT has
grown from a  small   teachers college  to  a comprehensive  university
with an enrollment of nearly  22,000 students offering undergraduate
and  master's level  instruction,  as  well  as   doctoral  programs
in    environmental geography  and   geographic   education.  New
doctoral programs are in development in education, and in health care
services,  administration, research, and policy.
