Article on New Approach to Census Indexes -- By Place of Birth

FYI: There is an article in this week's LHGL News on the new census indexes
based on place of birth.

In a nut shell, these initial 5 CD's index all heads-of-household born in 10
states, Indiana, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts,
Connecticut, Maine, Vermont and Rhode Island.

For example the New York CD is an index to all heads-of-household born in
New York but living anywhere in the US in the 1870 census. According to the
article there are 1,198,285 households where a member of the household was
originally born in NY as of 1870. 41.4% of these were living in some other
state than New York.

Clearly this new approach will make it much easier for genealogists and
local historians to trace the migration patterns of 19th Century Americans.
