Re: What do you tell a 9-year old?

On occasion, I have had to explain the archives to visiting confirmation
classes, young people about age 14. They listened dutifully, but generally
only perked up when I pulled out a few old hymnals, the little "saddlebag"
variety, about 2 by 3 inches, no music, just words in tiny type. Granted
these are library items not true "archives." They made an impression,
though, because the young people could relate them to the current version
that they used every week. I would look for "show and tell" items that have
a modern equivalent recognizable to a 9 year old.

Maybe you can also tell stories about archival "mysteries" or "rescues" that
you have encountered. I have gotten a lot of mileage out of the missing
volume of a series of official minutes that was found fallen behind a drawer
in a privately owned desk when the desk was being sold.
