Disaster Planning Workshop

The recent "Seattle Shakes" here in the Pacific Northwest has has led a
number of institutions
to dust off and review their disaster planning documents. The workshop
described below, is one way in
which institutions might be able to critically evaluate the planning which
they have done.

"Exercising" Your Disaster Plans
Julie A. Page, Preservation Librarian, UC San Diego Libraries
Water damage? Earthquake? Flood? Fire?
What do YOU do when a disaster hits your library? What do you do first? Who
are the key players and what do they need to do? How well does your disaster
plan work? Where are the holes in it? Wouldn't it be great to know all this
in advance of an actual disaster?
If you were at the emergency preparedness workshops Tom Clareson did for us
a few months ago this is your opportunity to practice what you learned. If
you didn't make Tom's workshops, then here's a chance to start your own
preparedness.
After Julie Page leads us in a brief introductory reminder about disaster
planning, the focus of the day will be on disaster exercises and drills. The
best way to know what to do -- right now! --when there's a disaster is to
have practiced. That's what we'll be doing. You'll get information about why
disaster exercises are important and how to do them in your library, along
with an afternoon tabletop exercise where you respond to a disaster,
learning firsthand from what worked and what didn't.
Who should attend? Everyone with a role in disaster preparedness and
emergency response at your library.
