ASSISTANT ARCHIVIST
URBAN ARCHIVES
TEMPLE UNIVERSITY

Responsibilities:  Primary responsibilities are to accession, process,
preserve, write finding aids, and make historical materials, in particular
visual resources, available for research use. A major responsibility for all
staff in the Urban Archives is to provide reference service to students,
faculty, staff of Temple University; to students from surrounding private and
public schools in the 6th grade to post-graduate levels; to librarians,
archivists, and other researchers locally, nationally, and internationally,
who are interested in the history of Philadelphia and its people. This
requires effective communication (written and oral), interpersonal skills,
research techniques, and ability to lift boxes weighing up to 40 lbs.
Knowledge of the internet and the ability to search for historical information
needed.  Some knowledge of Philadelphia history helpful, to provide reference
for researchers who visit or communicate via telephone, letter, e-mail or fax.

Other duties and responsibilities include -- develop and enhance knowledge,
expertise and experience of issues, trends and developments related to the
archival profession, with emphasis on visual resources.  Write and contribute
to articles for the Urban Archives News Notes, a newsletter produced twice a
year by the Urban Archives Staff.  Assist with providing guidance to archival
students doing internships in the Urban Archives; contribute to the
development and implementation of procedures, policies, and goals of the Urban
Archives department.  Research, assembly, and mount exhibits; perform some
clerical duties such as filing, typing, and retrieving record boxes; work
closely with and provide assistance to the other Archivists in the Urban
Archives.

Qualifications:
BA required, preferably in history, or the equivalent.  Archival classes taken
or a certificate received in archives management and the application of
archival techniques, highly desirable.

Minimum three years of archival experience required.  Basic knowledge of
Philadelphia history preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with
archival arranging and processing techniques of manuscript and photographic
collections. Basic knowledge of exhibition and outreach programming. Knowledge
of archival research techniques. Some knowledge of photography techniques and
the arrangement and preservation of photographs is desirable.   Understanding
of computers and word processing software packages. Excellent interpersonal,
oral, and written skills required

Knowledge of the changing processing techniques in the archival profession.
Flexibility and adaptability is required.
