Position announcement--part-time digital consultant

Position Announcement: Digital Collections Support Specialist

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is seeking a digital collections consultant
to provide technical leadership and support for a four-year archives
initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation. This project will result in
the production and encoding in EAD (Encoded Archival Description) of
finding aids for five of the Museum?s most historically significant
archival collections, and the creation of a digital library of images
selected from these collections. The Digital Collections Specialist will
oversee all technical aspects of creating an integrated electronic research
site to deliver encoded documents, metadata and digital images to
researchers via the World Wide Web. She/he will also establish guidelines
and infrastructures for subsequent digital projects. Success in the
position will be measured by the degree to which systems and digital
resources are deployed in a timely fashion and are reliable, efficient,
intuitive, and sustainable. Reporting to the Mellon Archives Project
Manager, this is a grant-funded, part-time (approximately 4-5 hours per
week on average) position for a 4-year duration.

Responsibilities.
Working with other members of the project team and the Museum?s IT
department, the incumbent of this position will build a collections
management system for the archival collections in MSAccess or other
relational database program, write scripts to extract and manipulate data,
and create templates to facilitate encoding in SGML/XML. In addition, the
digital collections specialist will oversee the creation of digital
surrogates and develop a system for storing and delivering these images.
She/he will be responsible for the design, functionality and maintenance of
the Museum Archives and Mellon Project web site and interface, including
the effective integration of encoded finding aids and related digital
images and advanced search and viewing capabilities. The incumbent will
research, recommend and implement third-party software as necessary to
ensure the delivery of high-quality images while providing protection from
illegal downloading and dissemination. She/he will keep abreast of
professional and technical developments affecting the project?s automated
systems and digital resources and make recommendations for upgrades,
software and equipment purchases, and migration strategies, consistent with
Museum and project objectives and policies.

Qualifications.
Required. M.S. in computer science or related discipline and/or ALA
accredited M.L.S. with a focus on systems infrastructure preferred, or an
equivalent combination of experience and education. Experience with
encoded text applications (XML, SGML and HTML) and relational database
systems, preferably SQL Server or Access, in a research setting.
Experience with delivering content in web-based applications. Demonstrated
ability to work effectively in a team setting with administrative,
professional, and support staff. Preferred. Programming experience,
preferably with Java, Visual Basic, and SQL. Experience with Cold Fusion
and ASP. Experience in a museum and/or archival setting desirable.
