Microfilm loans

The Bronx Zoo Library (OCLC symbol UVZ) loans microfilms of archival
records to other libraries, without charge, for four weeks with renewals
permitted. The library will loan multiple rolls of microfilm from the same
collection at one time as part of one transaction on OCLC. Ganging multiple
rolls from one collection or series on one form saves work for interlibrary
loan personnel making the request and ultimately helps the researcher. This
policy costs my library a miniscule amount money in the form of potential
OCLC transaction credits. This cost is nothing compared to the cost of
actually making microfilms.

I ship microfilms via UPS and ask libraries to use UPS when returning
microfilm.

For a microfilm project last year, I made two service copies of the
microfilm in order that one set would always be available for loan.

Loaning microfilm far from "putting everything on the Internet" but the
loans enabled some researchers to begin or continue their research without
coming or returning to the Bronx.
