genealogy archives

http://www.familytreemagazine.com (not to be confused with
familytreemaker) has a metasearch engine that allows you to do one
search that picks up genealogy information from 10 or 12 sites other
major groups, including Ancestry and RootsWeb (disclaimer: this site
is mounted by the company that published my book, _Long-Distance
Genealogy_)

http://www.familysearch.org is the site for the Latter Day Saints
library--you can search their collections but they also have a search
engine that searches the Internet

http://www.Cyndislist.com/ is an index of "more than 93,500 links"
to Internet sites related to genealogy--it has a subject heading for
"Surnames, Family Associations, and Newsletters" - but you may not get
to it, because you'll be so fascinated with trying out the many other
interesting subject headings you'll see as you page down to S.

I haven't tried the following in a while, but if they are still
there, they may help:
http://www.gendex.com/gendex/
http://www.geneanet.org
http://www.gensource.com/ifoundit/
http://www.yourfamily.com/
http://www.genealogyportal.com

And don't forget, if you know the location for the family in
question, you can us the USGenWeb page for the county: Start out at
http://www.usgenweb.org from which you can choose your state and
then choose your county. Many counties have surname registries,
queries (mandatory for all the county web pages) and other sources
that might help.

Each of these search engines has a different way of searching, so
each picks up sites that the others don't.

Finally, remember that there are no Internet police out there
checking to see if the information people put up is correct. Unless
you find scanned documents (and even those *could* be altered)
consider the Internet is a secondary source, and go to primary sources
to verify what you've found.
