Re: Why do we stay with it?

Ellee,

Even though I have often been tempted to run out the door screaming, I stay
with it for several reasons:

1. My life-long love of the subject - construction and mining machinery.

2. I get paid to apply my best workplace skills to this subject.

3. Being able to help others in their research of same. Helping kids who
are interested in this stuff multiplies the point value of this one
logarithmically.

4. Being able to create something of - I hope - lasting value through
organizing and cataloging the collections, writing finding aids, helping to
        write our magazine, etc.

5. Satisfaction, in a very roundabout way, of my childhood dream of a
career involving this equipment. Plans A through --- to become a contractor,
operating engineer, etc., never came to fruition for one reason or
another, so now I work with it in ways that are best suited for my talents
and
abilities (both physical and mental) after all.

6. Satisfaction of a different sort in being able to help the leaders of
our Association better understand just what they are trying to do in
establishing an
archives of construction, mining and dredging equipment history.

7. The help, support and camaraderie of other archivists through this
very helpful list.

Best wishes for your project! Let us know how the responses come out.
