Sample of Collection Guides on the Web

Dominic and others:
On the web site for the Immigration History Research Center at the University of Minnesota we have posted our "Guide to Collections." This web page is based on the book form of this guide that was published in 1991. Due to the nature of our collection, there is a chapter for each of the ethnic groups that comprise our collecting scope (mainly those immigrants from Eastern, Central, and Southern Europe and the Near East). Dominic, we have some materials on Eastern European Jews that might be of interest to you.

I had access to the original word processing documents that were used to publish the guide. I converted the Word document to HTML, added some navigation and photographs, and mounted the pages. I am continually adding new entries to this guide.

We have also begun to convert our finding aids (inventories) to HTML as well. In some cases I have access to the Word documents, but for our older inventories we have had to re-type them. One of my student assistants is doing the word processing, while I do the HTML mark-up. Some of the inventories were quite old and faded - so it was good to produce good clean copies for the reading room as well. We considered scanning and OCR for the existing inventories, but in the end decided against it. We are also recruiting volunteers who have computers at home who can re-type inventories for us. Slowly we'll get all of the inventories up on our web page.

Some of our visiting researchers have already made use of these on-line inventories. It is just amazing to have researchers, who come from a distance, show up with a list of collections and specific folders they want to see. It saves time for both the researchers and our staff.

Another repository with a similar collecting scope is the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies in Philadelphia. They too have posted their guide to manuscripts and microfilm on their web site at:

Hello:

Can anyone refer me to some collection guides that have been published on the web. I am looking for some samples that I can use to guide me in the creation of one here at the Society.

Thanks for your help.
