Re: Paper Tiger

The librarians may, in part, be responding to what their patrons are
"requiring." Here at Illinois Institute of Technology (note the name), we
find it hard to get students to use traditional print sources even when we
offer or suggest them. If it's not available on the web, students seem not
to be interested in pursuing alternate sources. I seem some validity to
that in so far as most of our students are working on very current
technologies, and historical (pre-web) materials are often already obsolete
for their purposes.

As much as I hate to admit it, I think that folks like Baker are correct
when pointing out how libraries may be forsaking paper for television
screens. Most librarians I know are obsessed with making themselves web
literate these days, and I rarely see them grab for an almanac when
answering reference questions at the desk anymore; they just turn away from
the customer, stare at the screen, and start typing. You hear lots of talk
about libraries facing a "crisis of relevancy" in the professional
literature, all the while while practioners scramble to turn their reading
rooms into internet cafes...

I guess thats why I'm an archivist......wait a minute....wasn't that last
week's topic?
