Baker's Dozen

Allan Goodich made a good point when he asked:

"How many of you criticizing Baker have really looked at the microfilms in
your holdings that you've made paper originals in terms of visual quality."

I just got done using some public service microfilm of a Montana territorial
newspaper that was so coated with crud it made my 12 year old's bedroom look
neat! I think we make a mistake when we film, discard the originals, and
then forget to treat the film as the "original" (which it is).

In the case of the film I was looking at, I am going to take it on faith
that someone has the master negative safely locked away and that good,
legible copies can be provided once this film starts looking like the back
road through Hell's Canyon: dirty, rough, and bumpy.
