Account books, day books, ledgers, journals...

To whom it may concern,

I work at a small historic house museum in East Tennessee and was directed
to your listserv through the museum listserv as a possible source for
answering some questions I have on a project I am about to begin. My
question is: What is the difference between account books, day books,
journals, ledgers, etc.? I am going to be transcribing what we have been
calling "account books" of the original owner of the house, but we would
like to find out if that is actually what we have or if we have one of
these other types of books. If possible could you please clarify for me
the difference in these different types of books or direct me to someone or
something that can?

Thanks for any help you can offer, Sincerely, Adrienne Marrah-Program
Assistant for Museum Program and Studies.
