APRIL 2001 MEETING NOTICE

Archives and Museums: Taking Archival Collections Public

While many archivists routinely mount exhibitions of material from their collections, many archives lack exhibition space; many archivists lack the time and/or skill to do more than the occasional flat or single-case exhibits. This evening's program will focus on two models: a collaboration between an archives and a museum and an institutional archives that "gave birth" to a museum.

As all archives are unique, the models under discussion are singular and may not apply point-by-point to other repositories. Both models, however, do raise interesting issues, among them collaboration, cost-sharing, conservation, division of labor, and the value of making archival collections publicly accessible in this way.

Panelists for this evening's discussion include:

GINO FRANCESCONI, Archivist, Carnegie Hall. Founder and curator, Carnegie Hall Museum

KENNETH COBB, Director, New York City Muncipal Archives and co-curator "Healing Waters: Utopian Responses to Dirt, Disease & Disorder, 1890-1940"

MADELINE ROGERS, Vice-President, public programs, South Street Seaport Museum and co-curator of "Healing Waters: Utopian Responses to Dirt, Disease & Disorder, 1890-1940," a collaboration with the NYC Municipal Archives.

This program, an informal discussion, will be moderated by William Casari, Archivist, The Forbes Magazine Collection. Members will be meeting in the gallery and will be able to view the current exhibit.
