Hi, Peter

I tried to post and I got one of those rejection notices about email
compatibility, etc.

Here is what I posted that got rejected -- if you want to send it along
asap, please feel free to --

I have followed the thread of discussion on the listserv about Nicholson
Baker's book, DOUBLE FOLD, with interest. Having read the book and most
of his other related writings, I, too, have been concerned by the nature
of many of the postings that reflect NOT having read the book and some
substantial misinterpretations of what Baker represents. The public
attention being devoted to this book represents both a challenge and
opportunity for us.

For the record, I have written a fairly lengthy review of the book,
forthcoming in SAA's ARCHIVAL OUTLOOK, but now available at the SAA web
site -- "Don't Fold Up: Responding to Nicholson Baker's DOUBLE FOLD" -- at
http://www.archivists.org/news/doublefold.html. I hope the review helps
archivists to sort out all the hype related to the book.

I appreciate SAA asking me to write the review and I appreciate any
comments people might want to make regarding my forthcoming debate with
Mr. Baker. People can also read another lengthy essay of mine concerning
Mr. Baker's "Deadline" article (the one on the newspapers) at "The Great
Newspaper Caper: Backlash in the Digital Age," First Monday 5- (December
4, 2000) available at http://firstmonday.org/issues/issue5_12/cox/. I
also co-authored an essay partially responding to his 1994
"Discards" article as With Jane Greenberg and Cynthia Porter. "Access
Denied: The Discarding of Library History." American Libraries 29 (April
1998): 57-61.
