*****INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL IMAGING TECHNOLOGIES FOR LIBRARIES AND
ARCHIVES*****

Monday, June 4, 2001 from 9am - 4pm at Wake Forest University,
Winston-Salem, NC.

The increase in digital imaging projects for library and archival
collections raises many issues related to selection, resource allocation and
long-term access (preservation). Issues addressed in this one-day workshop
include: What collection or resources are appropriate for digital
conversion? How will the digital files be maintained? Who is responsible for
ensuring future access to this digital information? To name a few. This
workshop is designed to provide participants with the tools needed to make
informed decisions about undertaking a scanning project.

Instructor is Faye Phillips, Assistant Dean of Libraries for Special
Collections, Louisiana State University.

Cost is $95 full members ($85 early bird, $120 late registration), $105
associate users ($95 early bird, $130 late registration), and $135 affiliate
(non-members), ($125 early bird, $160 late registration). Any institution
within North Carolina qualifies for the member rate.

*****DIGITAL LIBRARY PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT*****

Tuesday-Wednesday, June 5-6, 2001 from 9am-4pm at Wake Forest University,
Winston-Salem, NC.

As libraries and other information institutions collect and provide access
to increasing amounts of digital data, they look to digital technologies to
improve access to existing collections in a variety of formats (text, audio,
video, photographs, objects, etc.). Long-term program management raises the
issue of how to coherently create, integrate, and sustain new digital
resources and programs, such as imaging projects, within existing resources
and programs. This two-day workshop is meant to help provide the knowledge
and expertise necessary to begin developing local digital resources in a
responsible, sustainable, and systematic manner, integrated with other
library procedures and workflow.

Instructor Erich Kesse is Director of the Digital Library Center, University
of Florida.

Cost is $200 full members ($190 early bird, $225 late registration), $210
associate users ($200 early bird, $235 late registration), and $260
affiliate (non-members), ($250 early bird, $285 late registration). Any
institution within North Carolina qualifies for the member rate.

and provide access to an image database. It focuses on the technical aspects
and on the issues associated with using digital imaging technology to
convert photographic materials and make them accessible on the Internet.

techniques, lighting, applying metadata standards, and database development.

Instructor is Grace Agnew, Assistant Director for Systems and Technical
Services at the Georgia Tech Library and Laurel Crafts, Project Coordinator
