JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION:       Archivist II, Local Archives Development Program
DIVISION:       Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, TN

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The person in this position will report to the Assistant State Archivist and assist in carrying out duties attendant on the Local Archives Development Program.  Will be responsible for site inspections and surveys of county and municipal records management offices and archives; discussions with local government officials, archivists, historians, and genealogists about developing, equipping, supplying and operating local archives; preparation and distribution of informational literature on local archives management to and for local government archives and records managers; representation of the Tennessee State Library and Archives at professional meetings to share and exchange experiences and solve problems related to local records and archives management; recording and reporting the work of the Tennessee State Library and Archives local records development program; providing support for the administration of Local Archives Development Grants; creating and maintaining directories of local archival personnel, county and municipal officials; other archival duties and functions as assigned, including but not limited to, processing state records and donated materials in the Tennessee State Library and Archives and assistance with the archives microfilming program, public research requests and records conservation and the like.
QUALIFICATIONS:  The following criteria must be met and demonstrated through documentation supplied with the candidate's application and only upon satisfaction of these criteria will a candidate be further considered for the position.  Candidate must hold a Master's degree in American History or related field; experience equivalent to two years of work in an archives, special collections library, or other records repository and at least six months experience in arranging and describing an archival collection.  Candidate must provide a sample of narrative writing to demonstrate competence in English composition equivalent to that of a successful research paper at the graduate level.  Candidate must demonstrate minimal competence in database and word processing skills, as well as a knowledge and understanding of the process and principles of records appraisal and disposition and the basic principles of archival theory and practice.  Candidate must be willing to travel regularly and extensively throughout the State of Tennessee to the sites of local government records offices and archives; be physically able to endure and maintain an acceptable level of performance in confined quarters and dusty or damp conditions for extended periods of time during examination of neglected records storage and be physically capable of lifting and carrying books and boxes of records up to forty pounds up flights of stairs.

Candidates who meet the required criteria will be further considered on the basis of the following and those with the strongest knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience will be given preference:

Previous work in the office of a Tennessee clerk of circuit court, clerk and master, register, or county clerk;

Previous work in a well-established county or municipal archives that has already achieved substantial arrangement and description control of both bound and loose records and/or extensive research and publication using local records of a variety of counties and/or municipalities.

Familiarity with current literature on and archival implications of electronic information processing and imaging systems; and, knowledge and understanding of archival microfilming practices and standards.

Knowledge and skill in preparing brochures, handbooks, and website pages for publication.

SALARY: Starting at $32,208 annual.
