Denver Seminar

LIBRARIANS, ARCHIVISTS, CURATORS IN DENVER FOR
SEMINAR ON CULTURAL HERITAGE COLLABORATION IN THE DIGITAL AGE

The Colorado Digitization Project and the Western Council of State
Librarians are sponsoring a one and one half day leadership seminar for
library and museum leaders on building cultural heritage collaboratives in
the digital age. Funded by the Institute of Museums and Library Services,
the seminar, to be held June 28-29 at the University of Denver, will bring
together librarians, archivists and curators from the 23 Western states to
explore the issues associated with developing statewide or regional
collaborative digitization initiatives. The conference will afford the
participants the opportunity to lay the groundwork for a state or regional
plan in their area.

Speakers include Beverly Sheppard, Interim Director, IMLS; Nancy Bolt,
Colorado State Librarian; Gladys Ann Wells, Arizona State Librarian; Dr.
Evelyn Hu-Dehart, University of Colorado, Boulder, Department of Ethnic
Studies; Deanna Marcum, CLIR; Kris Haglund, Denver Museum of Nature and
Science; and Howard Besser, University of California Los Angeles. The
topics will range from why museums and libraries should collaborate on
digitization initiatives to digital archiving, to specific issues
encountered in implementation including standards, training and incentives
for participation.

In addition to the leadership seminar, a half-day seminar on copyright is
scheduled, co-sponsored by the National Initiative on Networked Cultural
Heritage (NINCH) and the CDP. It is one in a series of copyright town hall
meetings sponsored by NINCH and funded by the Kress Foundation. Copyright
and Digital Primary Source Materials will be held on June 28, 9am-1pm at the
University of Denver. Speakers include Peter Jaszi, American University,
Washington College of Law; Bernard Reilly, Chicago Historical Society; and a
panel of local librarians and archivists. David Green, NINCH Executive
Director, will welcome the group and provide the background for these
important NINCH Copyright town hall meetings.

Registration for these conferences is open to librarians, archivists,
curators and others interested in the topics. The planners encourage the
attendance by several individuals from a region or state, so that planning
activities can be initiated at this conference. There is no cost for the
conference, however attendees will have to cover hotel and transportation
costs. For more information on the seminar see the web site
