Graduate Assistant Stipends

Seventeen people responded to my inquiry regarding stipends offered graduate students employed in special collections. The lowest stipend is given by two of the largest institutions represented in the responses, and is simply minimum wage for hours worked. The most generous was $9,000 with full tuition waiver for 15 hours per week for nine months.

There was no correlation between the generosity of the stipend and the size or reputation of the employing institution. Most institutions employ assistants for either 15 or 20 hours per week over a nine-month period. A few institutions offer twelve month appointments. Several respondents noted that the stipends offered by their departments are significantly lower than those offered by other departments within their institutions.

Thanks to all who took the time to respond and share their information.
