Re: EAD (SGML)

Ellen,

Currently the only browser capable of viewing SGML is Internet Explorer 5, so
most institutions map to HTML for use. By doing so, they have more control
over display but lose searchability within tags. The hope is that someday the
browser technology will catch up and we will no longer have to map to HTML.

If your institution has not yet created any EAD finding aids in SGML, you may
want to consider marking them up in XML, a subset of SGML that is less complex
which appears to be the emerging standard. The same problems with viewing
still apply.

There is no standard way to map to HTML. I recommend you go to the EAD Help
pages at http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/ead/ and refer to the "EAD Sites
Annotated" for descriptions of participating institutions' methodology. There
is also a section on "EAD in XML"

You may also want to join the EAD Listserv at
http://www.loc.gov/ead/eadlist.html

Original Message:
Currently we plan to put our finding aids online. I realize that EAD is the
method approved by the SAA but would like to receive input from archivists
regarding the use of EAD.

I've tried viewing EAD encoded finding aids in SGML but have not been
successful in downloading the browser or opening the file. I noticed many of
the institutions that use EAD encoding, offer both HTML and SGML for viewing.

If your institution only uses the SGML, do you receive email from users who are
unable to access the finding aids? Please share the positive and negative
aspects for both browsers and recommendations from implementation experiences.

Thanks,
