Position Announcement



The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art seeks applicants for a Collections
Photography Manager.  The Museum is located in Kansas City, Missouri, an
affordable community with a greater metropolitan area population of 1.5
million.  A capital campaign is underway with a goal of $200 million having
recently been passed.  These funds will be used for a building expansion
designed by renowned architect Steven Holl and to increase endowment.  For

This position serves as head of the Collections Photography department.  The
department creates and maintains film and digital images of artworks,
exhibitions, gallery installations, building, and grounds, and fills
internal and external requests for images needed for reproduction, research
and documentation.  The manager supervises a staff currently numbering three
(assistant photographer, rights and reproductions coordinator, and
collections documentation specialist).  Other major duties include managing
film and digital images, researching and acquiring database software to
manage these resources, creating weekly photography schedule, evaluating
reproduction quality of photographic materials, and creating and
administering departmental budget.

Requirements include a bachelor's degree in art history or related field;
minimum of three years' museum experience managing photographic materials;
knowledge of rights and reproductions practices; understanding of film and
digital photography techniques; experience evaluating quality of
photographic materials; supervisory experience; ability to successfully
balance multiple priorities; strong organizational and written/oral
communication skills; ability to work both independently and as part of a
team; and significant experience with office procedures and word processing,
database and spreadsheet software (preferably Microsoft Office).  Prior
experience working with a digital imaging project and Argus or other museum
collections database software preferred.
