Position Title: Special Collections Librarian, Electronic Media Materials

Classification: Assistant Librarian

Compensation: $36,360 - $43,640.
Compensation will be based on relevant qualifications and experience.

The Stanford University Libraries are seeking qualified
candidates for the position described below.  Applicants

This position has primary responsibility for the
arrangement and description of manuscript collections
materials on electronic media, in both digital and analog
formats, under the supervision of the Special Collections
Librarian for Manuscripts Processing.  As Stanford
University Libraries has a comprehensive program for
collection development in the fields of American and
British History of the 20th Century, American and British
Literature of the 20th Century, the History of Science and
Technology, especially as it relates to the development of
Silicon Valley, and the Mexican American political,
cultural, and artistic experience in the United States
during the latter part of the 20th Century, significant
quantities of collection material is being acquired that
exists solely in electronic format in all of these
intellectual collecting areas.  Therefore, the Assistant
Librarian in this position is expected to be able to
produce high-quality work with a minimum of day-to-day
supervision and to be able to demonstrate knowledge or
academic interest in at least one of these areas.

The Assistant Librarian will be responsible for taking a
lead in determining the appropriate routine methodology for
preserving, arranging, and providing access to electronic
media materials within Stanford's extensive Manuscripts and
University Archives holdings, ranging from audiotape,
videotape, digital files on tape, diskette, CD-ROM, and
other electronic media as they develop, in consultation
with the Manuscripts Processing Librarian, the University
Archivist, and the Head of Special Collections.

This position will have primary responsibility for
identifying electronic media materials in need of immediate
conservation treatment and assisting in the development and
execution of any appropriate treatment plan in consultation
with the Manuscripts Processing Librarian and the Library
Preservation Dept. staff as appropriate.

At times, the position will also require processing of
traditional manuscripts materials, especially as they
relate and support the electronic media collections.

The Assistant Librarian will also be responsible for
identifying confidential materials in the collections and
routinely consult with the Special Collections Librarian
for Manuscripts Processing and the Head of the Department
to follow established procedures to restrict access to
these items.  When appropriate, the Assistant Librarian
will be responsible for weeding inappropriate materials
from the collection and either destroying them or returning
them to the donor of the collection, according to the
agreement in the Deed of Gift / Sales Agreement and/or in
consultation with the Special Collections for Manuscripts
Processing as appropriate.

The Assistant Librarian will be responsible for creating
appropriate access tools to collections including
computerized databases, traditional finding aids, and
electronic finding aids marked up in EAD according to
established principles, consulting with the cognizant
curator as appropriate, as well as creating RLIN AMC
catalog records for archival and manuscript collections
according to national standards (AACR II, APPM).

The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate
the possession of, or aptitude to develop, a strong skill
set in the handling, preservation, and long-term access
options for electronic media in all formats, including
audiovisual materials, electronic data files,
magneto-optical devices, CD-ROMS and other electronic
files, both analog and digital.

It is expected that the Assistant Librarian will train and
supervise student assistants / hourly employees in
conjunction to assist in the processing of the various
collections.

The successful candidate is expected to show a willingness
to assist with the inventorying and packing of
newly-acquired collections in remote locations.

Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

1. An ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent archival
certificate; or equivalent training and experience.  A
post-baccalaureate degree, preferably in the humanities or
the social sciences, is highly desired.

2.  Experience or training  in the processing of complex
archival collections.

3.  Demonstrated ability in managing para-professional
staff and coordinating resources for the effective
processing of archival and manuscript collections.

4.  Familiarity with the MARC AMC format and other relevant
standards.

5.  Demonstrated success in database design, preferably
FileMaker Pro.

6.  Familiarity with the needs of academic researchers;
experience in a research library highly desirable.

7.  Knowledge of current technologies for the broadcast
dissemination of information (e.g. the Web and related
applications)

8.  Demonstrated knowledge or aptitude with computer
technology and other electronic media.

9.  Must be able to routinely lift boxes weighing up to 40
lbs.

Desirable

1.  Formal coursework in archival management

2. Applicable experience in web authoring, SGML markup,
and/or database design.

3. Knowledge of at least one modern European language other
than English highly desirable.
