POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Special Collections Coordinator

Southeast Community College in Cumberland, Kentucky has an opening for the
position of Special Collections Coordinator.  The position is responsible
for managing the collections of the SECC Appalachian Archives and will also
teach and participate in the design of the college's Museum Management
program.

Responsibilities

I.  Managing the collections of the SECC Appalachian Archives  The Special
Collections Coordinator is responsible for the physical maintenance of the
Archive's collection and making those collections accessible to the public.
The Archives collections focus on material pertaining to the history and
culture of the college's service area of Harlan, Bell, and Letcher counties
in Kentucky.  The Archives includes roughly thirty major collections,
including the Ward-Hamlin collection of oldtime country music; the
International Harvester/US Steel collections documenting the construction
and operations of coal camps at Benham and Lynch; the James Golden art and
pocketknife collection; and over 1000 oral histories.  Primary areas of
responsibility include: 1) Preservation of the Archive's collections; 2)
Growth of the Archive's collections; 3) Maintenance of the Archive
collection catalog; 4) Accessibility of the collection to the public; 5)
Recommendations regarding facilities, equipment, and supplies; 6)
Recommendations regarding archive policy; 7)Supervision of temporary
personnel; 8) Participation in efforts to raise money for the Archives; and
9) Service to SECC and the SECC service area as determined by school policy
and SECC administration

II.  Development and Coordination of the Museum Management program
Southeast Community College is developing an integrated series of new
courses meant to provide service to small museums, archives, and other
public collections in its service area and the surrounding region.  The
program is focused on all-volunteer or small-staff cultural institutions and
organizations and is intended to develop their capacity to catalog,
preserve, and present collections, create exhibits, market themselves, and
otherwise serve the public more effectively.  The program will likely focus
on delivering courses through alternative systems including summer
institutes; intensive seminars and workshops; and distance learning
technologies.  The program will require a coordinator who is competent in a
variety of aspects of either archival or museum management; comfortable
working with community organizations; and capable of integrating other
resources, such as adjunct faculty, into the program.  The Special
Collections Coordinator will develop the program in a supportive environment
in collaboration with Appalachian Program staff and the administration of
SECC.  The Special Collections Coordinator's responsibilities to the Museum
Management program will include: 1) Participation in the design of the
program; 2) Teaching courses; 3) Assisting in fundraising for the program;
and 4) working with partners for the continued improvement of the program.

The Special Collections Coordinator position is a part of the Appalachian
Program at SECC.  The Appalachian Program's work includes 1) an ongoing
series of public forums on regional studies and community development; 2) an
Appalachian Studies program; 3) a systemic effort to document, preserve and
present regional experience through the Appalachian Archive; and 4) a
program and curriculum development function.  The position reports to the
Appalachian Program Director.

The Special Collections Coordinator is a twelve-month, tenure-track position
requiring ALA-accredited MLS or masters degree in archival management or
museum management, or masters degree in a related field with experience in
the field of museums or archives.  Appointment date: July 1, 2001.
