The Gilder Lehrman Collection seeks a full-time Archival Assistant to aid in
the processing of the Livingston Family Papers.  This is an 11,000-item
collection pertaining to the early settlement of New York State, including
documentation of financial, political, and commercial practices, such as
trade with Great Britain, and relations with Native Americans.  The bulk of
the Livingston Papers dates from 1680-1720.
 
Duties:
Prepare bibliographic description of manuscript documents for entry in a
database system
Prepare transcripts and more extensive document descriptions for selected
documents
Assist the Collection Management Archivist as required

Required Skills:
Excellent writing and organizational skills
Ability to work independently
Demonstrable computer skills
Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a major in history

Preferred:
Interest in early American colonial history
Familiarity with historical manuscripts
 
Base salary: $26,000 annually.  Actual salary will be commensurate with the
candidate’s experience, and includes the Collection’s excellent benefits
package.  Applicants desiring to work less than full time, but at least 30
hours per week, will also be considered. 
 
The Gilder Lehrman Collection is one of the largest collections of American
historical documents in private hands. Its holdings encompass materials from
the first European encounters with the New World to recent events, with
emphasis on the period from 1760 through 1876. The Collection exceeds 50,000
items, principally autograph manuscripts and printed documents, and
continues to grow.
