Re: 16mm film
Is the film acetate based or nitrate based?
The only way I know to prevent further deterioration is to place the items in cold storage. Here at the National Archives were have had to take such measures to save some things in our collections.

I am new to this list, in fact I am new to this profession so I
apologize if I am asking a question that will seem obvious to others.
We have some 16mm film in original metal containers. When you open the
container, you can smell the acid. Is it possible to store them to
prevent further deterioration pending us finding the necessary funding
to have them transfered to videotape?
Where can I find a list of people who could do such work? I wouldn't
want to trust the film to just anyone.
Thanks for your help
