Friday Funny

Being from Springfield, Illinois, I've been pummeled over the years
with Abe's this and that. And yes, we've got things donated here
where the donor swears of a connection to something. "This is the
actual axe that came with great-grandaddy in the Conestoga wagon
across the Alleghenies back in '04 ... we've replaced the handle twice
and the axhead three times ... but this is a genuine find!"

I remember there was a great Chicago candy maker who amassed
a fortune and turned to collecting. Most of his collection ended up
at the Chicago Historical Society, and curators were too embarassed
to show a lot of items. He had framed snakeskins saying "from the
Garden of Eden snake" and -- the story goes -- Adam's fig leaves ...

But the tables were turned some years back when the Society actually
had an exhibit of fakes, forgeries, and "wild tale" items. It was fun,
funny, and the public loved it.
