clips/ attaching papers

>How about numbering the pages lightly in pencil, with some kind of
title/slugline, e.g., "James Report, date, Page 1 of x"? Time consuming but
not harmful.

The problem with this sort of thing is material in bulk. For three 18th
century letters, it is definitely an option. So is the wrapping technique
previously discussed.
But when one has 100 cu ft of club records or even 19th century family
papers, for instance, and has laboriously reassembled parts of letters and
their envelopes, there is no time/staff for hand numbering while wrapping
increases the bulk too much. We are now using stainless steel clips.
