Merci Cars - or Try, Try again!

The text of my message seems to be lost out in the ether. So let me try
again.

Track gauge (distance between the rail heads) was not the problem.
Incompatibility of coupling systems was. The majority of the railway
system in France was the same 56.5 inch standard gauge used in the
United States. However, in Europe the normal coupling system used links
and buffers instead of the automatic couplers that became standard in
North America after 1903. The continental rolling stock could not
couple to that used in North america, but it would certainly fit the
standard gauge track.

If you are interested in a much more detailed overview of the subject of
car couplers, see John H. White, *The American Railroad Freight Car.*

Cheers!
