        AVAILABLE POSITION


DATE:           July 25, 2001           	

TITLE:  Project Curator – Edelman Archive
                Manuscripts Department, Exempt, Temporary Grant-sponsored
full-time for 1 year, 37.5 hours/week

Working under general supervision, processes, organizes, catalogs, reviews
for conservation, and prepares finding aids for the archive of the personal
and political papers of Los Angeles County Supervisor Edmund D. Edelman.
Has regular contact with staff throughout the Library.  Reports to the
Curator of Western & Hispanic Manuscripts.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Appraises and evaluates organization of office files
and personal papers of the archive.  Working with Curator of Western &
Hispanic Manuscripts, determines intellectual organization of processed
archive in accord with standard archival practices.  Undertakes physical
organization and cataloguing of the archive in accordance with nationally
established descriptive standards for archival collections.  Re-houses the
collection in appropriate acid-free folders and boxes, in the course of
which also surveying the conservation needs of the material, removing all
paper clips, etc.  Working with the Curator of Western & Hispanic
Manuscripts, creates and generates descriptive database appropriate to the
folder-level processing of the archive, for subsequent in-house and on-line
access by scholars.  Generates folder-level inventory from database ready
for EAD mark-up.  Provides concluding analysis and description of the
archive for the Library’s Edelman Collection Finding Aid.  Provides
reference assistance to any scholars who may be granted limited access to
the collection during processing.


OTHER FUNCTIONS:  Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:  M.L.S. or M.I.S. degree with specialization in archives and
manuscripts, or comparable training, such as, for example, Certification
from the Academy of Certified Archivists.  Knowledge and understanding of
Los Angeles or Southern California area politics and government, such as
would usually be obtained through formal college-level course work in the
history or politics of Los Angeles, California, or through work experience.
Knowledge of basic computer word processing and database systems.  Excellent
written and verbal communication skills.  Able to lift and move boxes
weighing up to 40 lbs. frequently.  Able to maneuver loaded book trucks.
Able to use stair cases regularly to get to required, secured work space.
Experience at academic, research, or local government archives preferred.
Minimum of one year’s experience of archival processing at a professional
level strongly preferred.

THE HUNTINGTON:  Located about 15 miles north-east of downtown Los Angeles,

public art galleries and botanical gardens.  The Huntington exhibits
collections of British, Renaissance, and American art, rare books and
manuscripts, and 150 acres of specialized botanical gardens.  It is
consulted annually by some 1,800 scholars, visited by 500,000 members of the
general public, and employs approximately 300 with an annual operating
budget of over $17 million.
