Archivist II - Nevada State Classified Position

The Library of the University of Nevada, Reno seeks an archivist who will
manage the university's archives, along with additional responsibilities in
the Special Collection Department.

The University Archives contains approximately 3500 linear feet of records,
correspondence, publications, photographs, microforms, and ephemera
documenting the administrative and historical history of the University of
Nevada, Reno. The Archives receives substantial use from students, faculty,
staff, and the administration.

The Special Collections Department houses the Library's collection of rare
books, manuscripts, university archives, and other groups of materials
which, because of their physical format or rarity, cannot be shelved with
the general collection. The manuscript and archival collection consists of
approximately 8,000 cubic feet of materials, which are important primary
resources for researchers, writers, and historians. These include
correspondence, diaries, financial records, reports, membership records,
bylaws, minutes, subject files, architectural drawings, and legal papers
which document the life and career of an individual; environmental,
cultural, social, and fraternal organizations; and businesses. Subjects
areas include agriculture and land use, education, ethnicity and race,
gaming, Native Americans, Lake Tahoe, literary manuscripts of Nevada
authors, lumbering, mining, the geographic areas of Nevada north of
Goldfield, the Great Basin region, Lake Tahoe, and California east of the
crest of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The collection also contains
significant holding of paper of former members of Nevada's congressional
delegation.

The University of Nevada, Reno has a student body of 12,500, with
approximately one-third enrolled in graduate degree programs. The University
is situated in Reno, a metropolitan area of 300,000, on the eastern slope of
the Sierra Nevada. The area offers many outdoor recreational
opportunities-the high desert to the east and the Sierra Nevada mountains to
the west. Reno is located 35 miles from Lake Tahoe, 120 miles from
Sacramento, and 200 miles from San Francisco.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the manuscripts librarian, solicit, appraise, arrange and
describe historically significant university records; arrange and describe
Special Collections manuscript and archival collections; provide in-depth
reference service for the university archives collections along with general
special collections reference duties; prepare print and on-line guides and
finding aids for the collections; working with the Technical Services
department prepare MARC cataloging records for archival collections; assist
in promoting resources of the department through exhibitions and
presentations; provide support as necessary in other areas of the
department; supervise student assistants; reports to the manuscript
librarian.

Qualifications:
A Master's Degree in library science or U. S. History from an accredited
college or university and one year professional experience in an archival or
historical repository in which applicant acquired experience in appraisal,
accessioning and conservation of documents; development of finding aids; and
reference service;
OR
A Master's Degree in closely related field of social science or humanities
from an accredited college or university plus a minor in U. S. History and
one year professional experience as described above;
OR
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the fields
of study described above and two years of professional experience in an
archival or historical repository in which applicant acquired experience in
appraisal, disposition, accessioning, arrangement and conservation of
documents; development of finding aids; and reference service;
OR
Certification as an Archivist by the Academy of Certified Archivists.;
OR
Two years of experience as an Archivist I in Nevada State Service;
OR
An equivalent combination of qualifying education above the high school
level as described above and qualifying paraprofessional archival
experiences; plus two years of professional experience as described above.
In addition, this position requires a working knowledge of professional
archival standards, principles, practices, and concepts as applied to the
operation of government and/or university archival records programs;
archival cataloging (MARC).

Approximate Annual Salary - $35,099 minimum - Pay Grade 33
