College of Charleston Library
Charleston, SC

The College of Charleston library is seeking a manuscript librarian for a
full-time 18-month position funded by a grant from the National Endowment
for the Humanities.

DESCRIPTION: Special Collections of the College of Charleston Library is
seeking a manuscript librarian for a grant-funded project to catalog and
help process the Jewish archives.  These archives contain material related
to Southern Jewish culture with an emphasis on South Carolina and include
recorded interviews, manuscripts, photographs and artifacts.

DUTIES: Create MARC records for archival and oral history collections
including electronic links to finding aids, responsible for original and
copy cataloging for all formats of print and non-print materials;
create/edit EAD finding aids; some appraisal, arrangement, description and
preservation of collections; create and maintain web pages relating to the
collections; supervise student assistants.

REQUIRED: ALA-accredited MLS or masters in social science; archival and
rare book cataloging experience with OCLC and automated library systems;
demonstrated knowledge of AACR2, USMARC format, and relevant subject
thesauri; knowledge of developing standards for digital resources and
archival materials especially markup schemes such as XML, HTML, SGML and
EAD; experience with scanning and digitization; organizational abilities to
manage diverse projects; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively,
both verbally and in writing; and demonstrated ability to apply data, word
processing and data building needs.

PREFERRED: Familiarity with South Carolina and Jewish history/literature.
Knowledge of basic archival theory, methods, and accepted practices.
Experience creating EAD finding aids and HTML documents.

ANNUAL SALARY: $32,700 with benefits
