"good" plastic vs. "bad" plastic

Hi all!

Don't you just hate it when you know you wrote down a note & now you can't
find it to write something due today?

Somewhere, I have written down (& can't find) just what the "good" plastic
is called (I know mylar) and what the "bad" plastic is called. This is for
an exhibit panel on photo preservation & letting people know what types of
things to look for when purchasing photo albums.

I know the "bad" plastic has that distinctive plastic smell. Is this PVA
(polyvinyl.....?)? Is there another type of plastic generally found in
department stores that isn't very good to store photos in?

I know the "good" plastic is mylar, but isn't there another that is a little
less expensive?

Sorry for the silly questions that every archivist should know but I can't
seem to get my mind to conjure up right now. :)

Feel free to reply to me directly since, I'm sure others don't want to be
bothered.
Thanks for the help!
Bridgette
