Actually, as consultants, we usually advise institutions to sell
locally, if an appropriate venue is available.  The idea here is to
attempt to keep the materials in the community, and to make the process
open.  There are occasions where such sales can be turned into :  fund
raisers; donation generators; educational opportunities; and publicity
engines.  They do require, however, preparation and sensitivity and to
the issues raised by even the most judicious deaccessioning.  EBay is
almost secretive in comparison.
