Re: NY News
Latest from the local radio news:
Lower Manhattan covered with smoke and several inches of dust and soot
-- "Looks like the Mt. St. Helens explosion"
Everything south of Chambers St. is being evacuated
City Hall has been evacuated
Warren Street, a few blocks north of the northern boundary of the WTC,
littered with burning cars set afire by falling debris
Stuyvesant High School in Battery Park City being used as a triage
center
St. Vincent's Hospital, the first large hospital north of downtown, has
put out a call for all plastic surgeons and burn specialists to report
Bellevue is only taking in victims from the disaster
Phone service is spotty
Brooklyn Bridge thronged with people escaping
Columbia has cancelled classes but offices remain open; the University
is trying to find temporary shelter and food for those of us can't get
home
This is the worst day in the history of New York City. Certainly there
is more damage and more casualties than during the Draft Riots.
We are in a state of shock here -- and I'm sure it will be worse when we
learn how many people have perished.
