Website for Mt. St. Mary's Archives

I am very pleased to announce the presence on the web of Mount Saint
Mary's Archives and Department of Special Collections. The Archives'
main page can be accessed through the library's site, or directly at
http://www.msmary.edu/studentsandstaff/library/archives.htm. This page
provides a brief introduction to the Archives, directions, hours, and
contact information. Do not despair at the tiny print! To reach the
full website, in a normal-sized font, click on the phrase "Archivist's
website" about two-thirds of the way down the page, or you can go
directly to http://members.jenzabar.com/Rebecca_Fitzgerald/index.htm.

The website contains information on policies and fees for researchers
who would like to do research at Mount Saint Mary's Archives, and also
provides guidance on conducting research in primary source material and
an introduction to archival reference procedures for those who are
wondering what they will encounter on their first trip to an archives.

For those who would like to know how to care for their own paper-based
collections, such as scrapbooks, letters, and photographs, the webpage
also provides links to useful sites geared toward laypersons. The site
includes as well the Archives' Collections Care Manual, with advice for
handling and caring for valuable artifacts such as furniture, glass,
metal, leather, textiles, books, and artwork.

The site also contains an overview of the collections that can be found
in the Archives. More specific information relating to individual sets
of records will be posted on the website as these finding aids become
available. As an aid to researchers, the website contains links to
other local, state, and national sites of interest.

The Archives' mission statement, collection policy, loan policies, and
processing manual can also be found here. The site already contains an
article I wrote on brittle paper based on an earlier presentation.

In the future, the website will include virtual exhibits, curriculum
guides, student projects, and a site for staff discussing the management
of records, while several sections will be expanded.

This is not a static website, but a work in progress, and I welcome your
comments and ideas.
