National Archives Week:  October 8-9, 2001

Archives in the New Millennium:  Saving the Past for the Future

Presented by the SCSU Historical Collection

Funded in part by the South Carolina Humanities Council, a state program of
the National Endowment for the Humanities.  The South Carolina Humanities
Council helps preserve the state's cultural heritage, fosters lifelong
learning, and encourages civic involvement among South Carolinians.

SCHEDULE
Day One?October 8, 2001
Fine Arts Center Auditorium, S.C. State University
9:00 am-12:00 noon  Archives 101
Presented by Karen Jefferson from the Atlanta University Center, Taronda
Spencer from Spelman College, and Mr. Richard Reid, President of the
Orangeburg Historical and Genealogical Society.  (The basics of archives and
why archival materials are vital to historical research.  Primarily aimed at
high school and college history students.)
Day Two?October 9, 2001
I.P. Stanback Museum, S.C. State University
9:00 am-10:30 am  Basic Preservation
Presented by Darrick Hart, Preservation and Conservation Specialist at USC.
(Basic storage and handling.  Bring your preservation problems/questions!)
10:45 am-12:00 noon  Scrapbooks Old and New
Presented by Theresa Montgomery of the S.C. Department of Archives and
History.
What to do with those old, crumbling scrapbooks and how to create new ones
the right way.)
12:00 noon-1:15 pm  Buffet Lunch at the I.P. Stanback Museum ($5.00 per
person?make checks payable to the Miller F. Whittaker Library.)
1:30 pm-2:45 pm  African-American Genealogical Resources
Presented by Alexia Helsley from the S.C. Department of Archives and
History.  (How records in archives, especially the State Archives, can be
used for doing African-American genealogy.  Two books are included free of
charge.)
3:00 pm-4:30 pm  Donating to Archives
Presented by donors to the SCSU Historical Collection:  Dr. Rutledge M.
Dennis,  Mrs. Rossie Caldwell, Dr. Clemmie E. Webber, and Mr. Richard Reid.
(Why it is important to donate materials to archival repositories.)
