Financing the Revolution--Free Public Lecture

"Financing the Revolution: Massachusetts Fiscal Paper"
Lecture at the Massachusetts Archives

Secretary of the Commonwealth William Francis Galvin announced today the
October talk in the Massachusetts Archives and Commonwealth Museum's fall
lecture series. "Financing the Revolution: Massachusetts Fiscal Paper"
will be presented Saturday, October 13, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at the
Massachusetts Archives building on Columbia Point in Dorchester (220
Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, MA 02125) by Laurie McAvoy.

The Massachusetts Archives has a large collection of Revolutionary War era
treasury records including treasury bonds and certificates. These documents
are a treasure trove of information for scholars of early America,
genealogists, and numismatics. Laurie will take us on a fascinating trip
through the documents by tracing the fiscal paper issued to pay
revolutionary soldiers. The treasury notes she will discuss include those
designated by William Anderson in his Price of Liberty as MA5, 13, 21, 21,
and 36. Her research in these records has yielded new information unknown to
the historical and numismatic communities, and she will share many of these
findings.

Laurie McAvoy is a Masters candidate at the University of Massachusetts, a
major in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, and a Systems Analyst for the
Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. She has spent months processing
these incredible records that were previously little researched.

The program is free and open to the public. Parking is free, and the
building is handicapped accessible. For additional information or a
brochure listing future lectures call 617-727-2816 or see our website at
