Re: Transcribing/search help...

We are utilizing Microsoft Word to write our inventories of collections
as well as descriptions of holdings. Each collection is one file usually
named for the accession number (e.g. M2001-10).

We then use a software program called "dtsearch" (which you can
download a trial version). In that program, you tell it the location of
the files you want to index...and it creates an online index...such
that you sit down in front of the computer, open dtsearch, open
indexes, pick the "inventories"....type in the term you want...and
it will show you every inventory that has the word..going to the
page or paragraph...and you can then just print that page or
paragraph. The catch is that while dtsearch is very powerful,
it does sometime goof up the formatting on the screen...so we
use it as a finder...not a final printout. But once you see where
the item is (say page 5 of inventory 2001-10), you can then
make a copy of that by opening Word and that inventory.
