Director, School of Library, Archival and Information Studies

The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies seeks a Director
as of July 1, 2002.  The School offers graduate degree programs in Library
and Information Studies [MLIS] and Archival Studies [MAS] together with
multidisciplinary and joint degrees in Children's Literature [MA] and
Teacher-librarianship [MA/Med]. The University Senate and government have
recently approved a PhD program to commence September, 2002. As part of
its five-year plan for 2001-2006 the School is investigating joint
programs in Health Informatics and an undergraduate program in
communication, media and information studies. There are 140 graduate
students, 12 full-time faculty members, 3 full-time staff and a number of
part-time and sessional lecturers and staff.

This appointment is subject to final budgetary approval and will be made
at the rank of professor with tenure, assuming that suitable qualifications
are offered. If a suitably qualified candidate is not found, the
University will consider an appointment at the rank of Associate
Professor.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director is responsible for: academic and
administrative leadership with colleagues; fiscal and personnel
management; administration of curriculum planning, implementation, and
evaluation; fund-raising and outreach to the external
community; representing the School in the academic and professional
communities; maintenance of active  relationships with the current student
body and with alumni; and promotion of high quality research within the
School. Teaching and scholarship are expected to a level appropriate with
overall responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS: Earned doctorate in a field relevant to the mission of the
School, demonstrated administrative leadership and experience, strong
record of scholarship and teaching and service, excellent communication
skills, dynamic leadership qualities, proficiency for fostering
collegiality and consensus-building, vision to create, facilitate and
implement changes to keep the School at the leading edge of
information-related education, capacity to create productive partnerships
across disciplinary and organizational boundaries and with business and
industry.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University
provides generous pension, medical and dental plans.
