Certification meets Friday Funnies

Last night, I bought groceries. Along with my receipt, I was given a coupon
for a promotion called "Box Top Education". The phrase "box top education"
seems to me a fitting description of the manner in which so many of our
colleagues attempt to replace professional reading with pleas for assistance
posted to various lists on the internet.

Today, as I sorted through a collection of ephemera, I found the following
"Exhortation to Medical Students".

".... books furnish a source from which very valuable facts may be learnt.
But knowledge acquired in this way is of infinitely less value than that
derived from your own observation. In the first place, you can never be
sure of your authority; how often have we to regret the inaccuracy of
medical writers! And then false facts generate erroneous notions and
impressions, which it may afterwards be extremely difficult to eradicate."
(J. Blundell, Introductory Physiological Lecture, "The Lancet" 9:115, 1826.)
