WTMJ-TV Milwaukee newsfilm donation

The Wisconsin Historical Society, WTMJ-TV Milwaukee, and the University of
Wisconsin--Milwaukee are pleased to announce the donation of WTMJ-TV's newsfilm
collection to the Wisconsin Historical Society. The collection dates from the
late 1940s to 1980 and consists of approximately 7,000 cans of 16 mm film.
WTMJ-TV, which has always been an NBC affiliate, was the first television
station in Wisconsin and the seventeenth in the nation to go on the air; its
first broadcast was on December 3, 1947.

Although the collection has been donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society in
Madison, the newsfilm will physically stay in Milwaukee and will be
administered
by the Milwaukee Area Research Center at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee
Golda Meir Library; WTMJ-TV will retain the copyright to the film. The
Milwaukee Area Research Center (ARC) is a branch of the Wisconsin Historical
Society's ARC network, which consists of thirteen centers throughout the state.
The Milwaukee ARC contains over 800 collections of public records and private
papers from a five county area.

The newsfilm documents events such as the Civil Rights movement in Milwaukee
during the 1960s, local sports teams (Milwaukee Braves, Milwaukee Brewers,
Milwaukee Bucks, the Marquette University men's basketball team), local
industries (Allis-Chalmers, Pabst Brewery, Usinger's Sausage), as well as
community events, local and national politics, and visiting dignataries. Many
segments will complement and enhance existing manuscript collections at the
Milwaukee Area Research Center. The collection will not be readily accessible
to the public for a period of time.
