Re: ARCHIVES Digest - 30 Oct 2001 to 31 Oct 2001 (#2001-303)

Julia Bazar deserves thanks for her thoughtful response to the service
animal question. A devastating riding accident (the injury was called
the Christopher Reeves break) gave me a powerful lesson on working as a
disabled person in an archival collection. With the help of a fabulous
team of surgeons from Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland a
team of highly motivated physical therapists and a supportive employer,
I was back at work within 6 months. I now know what it is like not to
be able to turn a page unassisted (let alone lift a book). Thank
heavens my facility is fully accessible and you can bet that anyone
rolling through our doors is going to get all the help they need -- and
they can bring whomever they like to assist, be they winged, quadruped
or biped. I returned my wheelchair to the hospital rental long ago and
can now hoist a full record storage box by myself but I will never
forget what it is like to have to depend entirely on others to read a
page.

p.s.: I also learned that occupational therapists are wonders at coming
up with creative solutions for handicapped readers.
