Re: oral history equipment



Just a gentle reminder to check through the list archives for information
first, as this very same question came up about a week ago.  The response
(started by me, I admit) was that the Marantz brand machines are very well
respected.  They'll cost you a bit more, but it's worth it for reliability.
You will only get one shot at each interview, and you don't want to risk a
problem on inferior equipment.

I can't remember precisely why, but Voice Activation is a definite no-no.  I
think the problem is that the VA takes some time to actually kick in, long
enough at least to miss words from the interviewee.  There was another
problem I think that made them a bad idea, but my brain is too fuzzy to pick
it out right now.
