Facts About The New York Times Company
The New York Daily Times was founded in 1851 by Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones as a four-page newspaper. It soon became a success, appealing to readers who wanted impartial coverage of the day?s news. Although the newspaper was successful, its fortunes began to decline toward the end of the century. In 1896, it was purchased by Adolph S. Ochs, whose stated aim was to, ?...give the news impartiality, without fear or favor, regardless of party, sect, or interests involved....?. He introduced many new features, and succeeded in his aim to make the daily one of New York?s finest newspapers. Since his death in 1935, the paper continues to be published by the Ochs family.

The New York Times has won more prestigious journalism awards for excellence in reporting, editing, photography and design than any other newspaper in the world. As of 2001, these include 81 Pulitzer Prizes. After decades of sole ownership by the Ochs/Sulzberger family, The Times began offering shares to the public in 1967 and embarked on a series of acquisitions and expansions. The Times is now the flagship publication of The New York Times Company, listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The Company?s core purpose is to enhance society by creating, collecting and distributing the highest quality news, information and entertainment.
