California Archivist Award of Excellence Nominations



Nomination forms are still available for the California Archivist Award of
Excellence. The nomination deadline is December 31, 2001.  The Archivist
Award of Excellence was established in 1989 by the California Heritage
Preservation Commission to honor individuals who have done superior work in
archives and records management within California. The California Heritage
Preservation Commission is the advisory body to the California State
Archives.
The award recognizes individuals who have done exceptional work in the
archival or records management field. Topics as diverse as developing a
major outreach program, conducting conservation projects, establishing a
model program, overcoming obstacles in program development, providing
significant financial support, or recruiting community support for an
archival or records management program may be considered. The Archivist
Award of Excellence is sponsored annually by the Board of Trustees of the
Golden State Museum Public Benefit Corporation.
Nominees must have worked with materials that are primarily related to
California; must have performed work that is clearly identified as archival,
record, or manuscript related; and must have completed it within the past
five years.
Past recipients include Msgr.  Francis J. Weber of the Archdiocese of Los
Angeles for establishing and organizing the Archival Center for the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles and for writing numerous publications; Francis
Hong, City Clerk of Stockton for establishing a records management and
archives program for the City of Stockton; John F. Lafferty of Preston
School of Industry for creating a centennial history publication for Preston
School of industry and preserving the school's records; Lynn A. Bonfield for
for preserving the archival records of the northern California labor
movement, and Victoria Yturralde for her work in the preservation of the
California Department of Parks and Recreation photographic collection.
Helene Whitson of San Francisco State University received the 2000 award for
her work in establishing the Bay Area Television Archives.
