Winter Workshop Listing From SOLINET



SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to announce our
Winter Preservation Workshops (Please excuse cross-posting):


*************Beating the Critter Jitters: Integrated Pest
Management*************

Thursday, February 7, 2002 at SOLINET, Atlanta, GA from 9am - 4pm.

This full-day session explains and assesses available strategies for
preventing and combating pest problems. Participants will learn to identify
common pests, recognize the damage various pests cause to library and
archival materials, and develop strategies for implementing an integrated
pest management program of monitoring and control. The instructor is Dr.
Michael Trinkley, Director Chicora Foundation.

Cost:  $95 SOLINET members, all categories ($85 early bird, $120 late
registration); $135 non-members ($125 early bird, $160 late registration).
Any institution within Georgia qualifies for the member rate.


****************Preservation Planning for Archives*****************

Thursday, February 21, 2002 at South Carolina State Library, Columbia, SC
from 9am-4pm.

The basic elements of archival arrangement and description- surveying,
selecting, and holdings maintenance- are essential components of archives
preservation management. These activities exemplify a practical approach to
preserving materials housed in repositories, regardless of size or scope.
The emphasis is on stabilizing archival records in order to extend their
life by: determining the preservation needs of the institution, developing a
systematic methodology for preservation priorities, and improving housing
and storage materials and practices.

This workshop is cosponsored by the Palmetto Archives, Libraries and Museums
Council on Preservation (PALMCOP).

The instructor is Pamela Hackbart-Dean, the Archivist of the Southern Labor
Archives at Georgia State University.

Cost:  $95 SOLINET  members, all categories ($85 early bird, $120 late
registration); $135 non-members ($125 early bird, $160 late registration).
Any institution in South Carolina qualifies for the member rate.



******************INTERMEDIATE BOOK REPAIR**********************

Wedensday-Thursday, March 6&7, 2002, at the Historic New Orleans
Collections, New Orleans, LA from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm each day.

This two-day workshop is designed to hone repair skills learned in
Fundamentals of Book Repair. Participants will receive hands-on instruction
of more advanced techniques for general collections repair (recase old
cover, attach loose signatures, and other endsheet replacement methods), as
well as an introduction to protective enclosures. Lecture and discussion
address treatment decision making, properties of adhesives, and managing a
book repair operation.

Participants in SOLINET's Fundamentals of Book Repair workshop is preferred
for registration. Otherwise, provide a written statement describing book
repair skill level. Instructors are Christine Wiseman, SOLINET Preservation
Education Officer and Tina Mason, SOLINET Preservation Field Services
Officer.

Cost: $155 SOLINET members, all categories ($145 early bird, $180 late
registration); $195 non-members ($185 early bird, $220 late registration).
Any institution within Louisiana qualifies for the member rate.

National Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Preservation and Access.
