POSITION: Curator of Manuscripts (Assistant/Senior Assistant
Librarian)
RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Head of the M.E. Grenander Department
of Special Collections and Archives, the Curator acquires, appraises, and
processes manuscript, photograph, and oral collections. Prepares finding
aids and guides (paper and electronic); creates MARC AMC records;
provides reference service; creates and mounts exhibits; serves as the
department?s Webmaster; oversees indexing, digitizing and reproduction of
manuscript holding; assists University Archivist with campus records
management program; participates in the development of Departmental
policies and procedures; supervises student assistants.
The M. E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives
occupies a state-of-the-art facility located on the 3rd floor of the
University?s New Library Building. The collection serves as a repository
for manuscripts, archives, rare books, and special collections of
original research materials, including the Archives of Public Affairs and
Policy and the German Émigré Collection. Consult the department?s website

Library faculty at the University at Albany, SUNY, are expected to
fulfill faculty obligations in the areas of research, publication and
service to the Libraries, University and profession, as well as specific
library assignments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA accredited
institution or foreign equivalent; graduate course work on processing
archival or manuscript collections; minimum of one year relevant archival
and manuscript experience; evidence of professional involvement or
scholarly activity; excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills;
knowledge of MARC AMC format; experience with HTML and web page design,
construction and maintenance; ability to perform physical activities
associated with archival environments.
Preferred: Knowledge of literary/historical research methods and 20th
Century American History; experience with digital trends and initiatives
for electronic preservation and access; understanding of text encoding
(EAD/SGML) principles and copyright issues.
SALARY: Commensurate with education and experience. Salary minima:
Assistant Librarian $36,200; Senior Assistant Librarian $42,575.
TERMS & BENEFITS: Twelve month appointment; sick leave and annual
leave at 1.25 days each per month; health insurance; dental, vision and
prescription coverage. Social Security coverage. TIAA/CREF or New York
State Teachers Retirement available (employee contribution rate
3%).

Albany?s University Libraries are among the top 100 research libraries in
the United States. They are a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, serving a campus community of 16,000
full-time and part-time students and 2,300 faculty and staff and a
broader regional, national and international community. The Libraries
employ a dynamic and knowledgeable staff of 144 FTE and 300 part-time
student assistants to provide excellent services to a campus community
that makes heavy demands on these services. Collections total 2 million
cataloged volumes and the Libraries offer a full spectrum of resources,
from rare books and manuscripts to an array of electronic resources.
Librarians work closely with teaching faculty to offer an extensive
program of user education and information literacy instruction. The
University Library on the main campus is a large 175,000 square feet, 4
story building providing seats for 1,660. It is open 109 hours a week. It
contains several fully-networked library classrooms and laboratories, a
60 seat computer user room, a large networked reference area, and an
interactive media center.
The Thomas E. Dewey Graduate Library for Public Affairs and Policy on the
Rockefeller College campus serves the graduate schools of Criminal
Justice, Public Administration, Social Welfare and Information Science
and Policy. The New Library, opened in September 1999, on the main campus
adds 143,000 net square feet of space to the University Libraries and
houses a technologically advanced, 500,000 volume science library, the M.
E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives, and the
Library?s Preservation Department.
The University Libraries are fully automated. ADVANCEWeb, the Libraries?
ADVANCE system contains information on all cataloged holdings and is
Internet accessible. The Libraries provide an extensive array of
electronic and networked resources and Web-accessible services. They are
members of the Association of Research Libraries, The Research Libraries
