ST. PETERSBURG - Something occurred to Detective Vonda Wynn after a complaint of identity theft appeared on her desk: Hadn't she seen this victim's name before?
As it turned out, a man she had helped arrest last year on charges that he used other people's information to obtain credit cards apparently served his prison sentence, was released and then tried to victimize the same people again, she said.

A 79-year-old Miami woman severely injured in a Hialeah car accident last spring was awarded $20.9 million by a civil trial jury Friday -- thanks to cellphone records that implicated the driver who hit her.

Archives begins building wing

The Alabama Department of Archives and History, an agency deeply rooted in the past, took a giant step toward the future Friday when it broke ground on a $30 million expansion.
The new west wing project, scheduled for completion by January 2004, will provide 60,000 square feet of climate-controlled storage and display space. A new museum devoted to Alabama history is also part of the plans.

Coca-Cola is launching an online archive of its past marketing campaigns as part of a worldwide internal network project.
Built and designed by technology giant IBM, the intranet is designed to enable employees on a global scale to access marketing material from Coca-Cola's history.

The FBI and the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service need to integrate their fingerprint identification systems more quickly in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the Justice Department's Office of Inspector General said yesterday.
"In light of the events of September 11, the need for linkage is even more critical than ever," Inspector General Glenn A. Fine said in a report. It acknowledged that any integration of the two separate systems "remains years away."
