Somewhere among the Bronx Historical Society's 2,311 cubic feet of documents are several paper chits from the 1840's that the now-defunct town of Westchester, now part of the eastern Bronx, gave to families who could not afford to feed themselves. These proto-food stamps read:
"Please give [name] $1 worth of groceries. Signed, [name], Overseer of the Poor."
